MHPSS and Reintegration Services Consultant

Project Context and Scope

Founded in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is one of the United Nations System Agencies and the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration. IOM works closely with government, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners. The organization is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Difficult migration journeys can trigger negative emotions, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. For some migrants, psychological well-being is affected by emotional distress linked to stress, worries, and uncertainty about their future. Others may have also experienced severe stressors, including violence, exploitation, torture, sexual violence, perilous journeys, and mistreatment. In some cases, pre-existing psychosocial issues and mental health disorders are exacerbated during the migration experience.

The provision of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) services in the centers plays an important role in protecting and assisting migrants, significantly contributing to the sustainability of other interventions in the centers. Since migration experiences vary, there is no single method or model for providing mental health and psychosocial support in migrant centers.

As part of voluntary return assistance projects and under the overall supervision of the Protection Coordinator, the direct supervision of the MHPSS Officer, and in collaboration with relevant IOM departments, the Consultant will provide operational and technical support to contribute to mental health assistance and the well-being of migrants in IOM centers while also preparing a reintegration project in their country of origin.
